Generally they are used to commemorate Dieties, Ancestors and Philosophies in a religous manner.  Today its easy to obtain statues or paintings of various Dieties/Gods etc. as well as Photographs of Deceased Relatives.  But back in the day cost and available space in someones residence was very limited.   Todays modern martial arts schools cater to a diverse client base and the inclusion of religous icons can be an obstacle.  However calligraphies are more seen as a work of art then a religous participation, etc.
